What do you like? Except for Formula 1 in the streets, I can almost guarantee that you'll find it here. Outdoor activities abound: hiking, skiing, snowboarding, golf, fishing, hunting. There is great theater, casinos, horse racing, and wonderful dining. By the way, the answer to the question, "What is New Mexico's state question?" is: "Red or green?" Drop me a line (see the Home page) if you don't know what this means.
Golf? How about three local courses, including a links course, and two more courses in nearby Cloudcroft and Carrizozo? As an added bonus, the weather in the southern reaches of the Rockies allows for nearly year around perfect conditions. Although, in winter you might want to throw in a couple of florescent colored balls. Take a look at this site for more information: Golf in and around Ruidoso.By the way the course at Cree Meadows is a driver and a 3-Iron from the back deck.
Skiing and snowboarding? Bring your own equipment or rent locally. Then head for Ski Apache. Sierra Blanca, the area’s 12,003 foot peak, is home to Ski Apache and located just minutes from Ruidoso. Fifty- five trails for skiers and boarders of all levels and a fall line of over 1800 feet, beginning at 11,400 feet, make skiing and snowboarding here a blast for everyone. Plus, New Mexico’s only gondola as well as triple and quad chair eliminate long lift lines. The views are truly amazing! You can see White Sands National Monument from the top of Apache Bowl. Ski Apache offers a full range of services from lessons to lunches. Come and spend the day!
Dining? We've managed to live in and/or visit a lot of interesting places in the US, Europe, Mexico and elsewhere. The variety and quality of the food in this area doesn't take a back seat to any place we've been. There is Mexican, New Mexican, French, Italian, German, Southwest, phenomenal breakfasts and bakery goods...it's all here. Here's a few that we have been to and enjoyed:
The Texas Club on Metz off Cree Meadows. Incredible food, drinks and entertainment and just down the street in Cree Meadows. If you like steak, you have to go to the Texas Club, but don't go without reservations.
Inn of the Mountain Gods. Enjoy Sunday breakfast and/or brunch. You can't beat their Eggs Benedict while looking at the lake, golf course and Sierra Blanca
Casa Blanca on Mechem for great enchiladas, chile rellenos, margaritas and all things Mexican
Morsels on Sudderth just before the Upper Canyon split on the left is fantastic! Chef/owner Kristian Markland received his culinary degree in Napa Valley and changes the menu at Morsels to take advantage of what's fresh for his Farm-to-Table cuisine.
Cornerstone Bakery on Sudderth, great breakfast and lunch. Free pie with lunch. Need I say more?
Log Cabin on Mechem. Great breakfast.
Le Bistro on Sudderth. Classic French food accompanied by a great wine list. We watched the Parade of Lights from the outside patio with Anne and Mike Reveley and then had a wonderful dinner inside with a bottle of Chateauneuf du Pape. Not sure about you, but I was impressed.
Take a look at these and others by visiting this site: Dining.
Casinos? There are a number of places to lay your money down, but the Inn of the Mountain Gods tops the list: Inn of the Mountain Gods. The setting is incomparable, the interior decorations are authentic. Don't rush from the garage to the casino. Take the time to study and understand the richness of the collection.
Horse racing? Remember the question on the home page about the world's richest horse race? Well Ruidoso Downs hosts the richest horse race in the world on Labor Day weekend. The season runs from Memorial Day to the grand finale Labor Day weekend. Did you know that Dale Robertson of Hollywood fame has had winners in the big event on Labor Day? (Dale also helped found the Innsbruck community in Ruidoso.) Visit the museum to better understand the history of the sport in Ruidoso and visit this site: Ruidoso Downs.
Theater? You'll find everything from Broadway shows to ballet and opera at the Spencer Theater in Alto. This is a very intimate venue with incredible shows and stars. Take a look at: Spencer Theater. How about dinner theater? Mountain Annie's on Sudderth has great food and terrific entertainment. Visit their site at: Mountain Annie's.
Actually, it's too difficult to describe everything that is available, so here's a good site to wander around. It's Ruidoso's web site, with up to date information including the weather, and you can make it your home page! Ruidoso.net.
